Alta Vista in 1956 was a well-established residential area, surrounded by busy shopping locales mostly along Blanco and Fredericksburg. Downtown was still the most popular shopping area. Most of the homes here were built in the 1920s and 1930s, though some were earlier and some later. The “suburbs” then, according to the new home ads, were springing up north of Hildebrand and in what is now the near northeast side.

DO YOU KNOW THE HISTORY OF YOUR HOUSE?
When was your house built? Who owned it before you? What stories could the walls tell? What was your street and the neighborhood like in 1925--80 years ago!? These are some of the questions that many Alta Vista owners ask about their homes, even those who have been here for many years.

Some of us are starting to compile a history of Alta Vista, and we’re searching for documents, old photos, artifacts, and just plain tales. It’s an informal project, but we hope to gather strength and speed as time goes by--with your help of course.

If you want to share any of the above, or just ask some questions, contact David Sonenschein at 731-8847 or email avnaweb@myway.com.
And, of course, if you have any historical photos or other material that relates to Alta Vista or the immediately surrounding neighborhoods, let me know and we will show them in this section.
