A favorite place among Beacon Hill-ers and Alta Visters for food, drink, and music, has been Casbeers in the strip center near Blanco and W. Fulton. Indeed, I’m told the place has been in business since 1932, and has fans all over San Antonio. It’s been a great burger alternative for those of us who don’t go to Chris Madrid’s because of past and present difficulties between Madrid and the neighborhoods.

But recently Casbeers shifted their evening dinner and music operations to “The Church” at 1150 S. Alamo. They may move their entire venue there in the future. A significant loss for many of us. Catch em while you can on Blanco.

Mandala Closes

Art gallery and cafe, Mandala, at Blanco and W. Fulton, closed its doors recently, depriving the area of a rich cultural alternative environment. We’ll miss the food, drink, visuals, meeting space, and presentations of all sorts that gave us a chance to expand our horizons. Good luck to Pramod Goshai! Pics below are from a March, 2008, poetry reading and art/photography exhibit (click to enlarge).
